Description
This coal tax post, dating from around 1860, is located a quarter mile south of Whyteleafe Station in the former urban district of Caterham and Warlingham. It is a stone obelisk standing approximately 14 feet high, set on a moulded tapering plinth. The shaft features a cast City of London Shield, with an inscription on the plinth that reads "14 & 15 VIC/C146". This post served as a marker for the boundary where duty was payable on coal, a tax that dates back to the 1660s.
