Description

This is a 19th-century coal tax post located on a railway embankment. It is made of stone and takes the form of an obelisk with a moulded plinth. The post bears the inscription "14 and 15 Vic c.146" and features a cast iron coat of arms of the City of London, complete with supporting beasts and a motto positioned about one-third of the height of the post. Coal tax posts were used to mark the boundary for the collection of tax on coal entering London.
