Description

This coal tax post is a 19th-century stone obelisk located on Dorking Road in Epsom. It features a moulded plinth that displays the numbers 14 and 15 from the Victorian legislation, specifically Act 146. The post is adorned with a cast iron frill that includes the coat of arms of the City of London, supported by beasts, along with a motto positioned about one-third of the height of the post. Coal tax posts were used to mark the boundary for the collection of tax on coal entering London.
