Description
This coal tax post, dating from around 1861, stands approximately 4.5 feet high and is made of metal. It features a four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier above, which has a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top. On the front, there is a cast City of London Shield, with lettering below on the pier that reads "24 & 25 VICT/CAP 42". This post served as a marker indicating the boundary where duty was payable on coal, a tax that has origins dating back to the 1660s.
