Description

This is a coal tax post dating from around 1861, located in Warlingham. It is made of metal and stands approximately 4.5 feet high. The post features a four-legged plinth and a chamfered pier topped with a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top. On the front, there is a shield of the City of London, with lettering on the pier that reads "ACT/24 & 25 VICT/ CAP 42". This post served as a marker for the boundary where duty was payable on coal, a tax that has its origins in the 1660s.
