Description

This is a coal tax post located on Chelsham Road in Warlingham, dating from around 1861. The post is made of metal and stands approximately 4½ feet high. It features a four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier and a moulded capital band topped with a pyramidal shape. On the front, there is a cast City of London shield, with lettering on the pier that reads "24 & 25 VICT/CAP 42". This post served as a marker indicating the boundary where duty was payable on coal, a tax that has origins dating back to the 1660s.
