Description

The War Memorial to the First World War, built in 1919, is a stone structure set on a three-step square plinth. It features a moulded base with a panelled tapering pedestal, which is decorated with a shield on each face at the top. Atop the pedestal stands a life-size figure of a soldier in Army uniform, carrying a rifle, alongside a female figure holding a child at his feet. This memorial was erected to honor those who died in the First World War, and a rectangular tablet was added to the base in 1946 to commemorate the dead of the Second World War. The memorial is an important central landmark on the green.
