Description

The coal tax post, dating from around 1861, is a metal structure approximately 4.5 feet high. It features a four-legged plinth and a chamfered pier topped with a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top. The front displays the City of London Shield, with lettering below on the pier that reads "24 & 25 VICT/CAP 42". This post served as a marker indicating the boundary where duty was payable for coal and wine, with the coal tax originating in the 1660s.
