Description

This is a coal tax post dating from around 1861, located on the south side of Harrow Road in Caterham and Warlingham. The post is made of metal and stands approximately 4½ feet high. It features a four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier above, which has a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top. On the front, there is a City of London shield, along with lettering on the pier that reads "24 & 25 VICT/CAP 42". This tax post indicates the boundary where duty was payable on coal, a tax that has origins dating back to the 1660s.
