Description
The Warlingham Park Hospital Water Tower is a Grade II listed building constructed in 1903 by architects G H Oakley and W S Skinner as part of the Warlingham Park Hospital, a mental asylum for the County Borough of Croydon. This free-standing structure is designed in a Venetian-style campanile and features three lower stages made of red brick in Flemish bond, with two upper stages alternating bands of yellow and red brick in Flemish bond, culminating in a clock stage of red brick. The tower has a hipped slate roof topped with an iron weather vane.
The three lower stages are adorned with lancet windows and round-headed windows on the ground floor, along with a round-headed doorcase that includes a six flush-panelled door and a louvred fanlight. There is a lean-to structure at the rear. Above these stages, the tower showcases two levels of ribbed polychrome brickwork with lancet windows. The water tank stage features chamfered corners, blank round-headed arches, clock faces on three sides, and pseudo-machicolations. A brick modillion eaves cornice and an elaborate metal weathervane complete the design. This water tower stands out prominently in the landscape, serving as a notable landmark.
