Description
The Church of St Mary the Virgin is a Grade I listed building dating from around 1100, with the chancel extended in 1250. The church features a 16th-century west porch, a late 19th-century bell turret, and a vestry that was rebuilt in 1965. The exterior is rendered with quoins at the ends and includes a timber-framed porch. It has plain tiled roofs, with wood shingles on the bell turret. The layout consists of a nave and chancel, with the porch and bell turret at the west end and the vestry located to the northwest. The windows are all 12th and 13th-century lancets with deep rere arches, including two on the east end. The west door has a Norman surround with one order of shafts supporting block capitals. Inside, the church is simply whitewashed with stone dressings. The chancel arch is supported by piers with scalloped capitals. Notable fittings include a rectangular piscina in the south chancel wall and a panelled pulpit with billet decoration. Monuments include one on the north nave wall dedicated to Robert Shallcross, who died in 1772, made of grey and white marble, and a brass on the south chancel wall commemorating John Brock, who died in 1495, featuring figures of his wife and children approximately 15 inches high.
