Description

The Church of St James is a Grade I listed building that dates from the 12th, 14th, 17th, and 18th centuries. It features an aisleless nave and chancel from the Norman period, along with a south porch and a bell turret. The chancel has two old windows on the north side and one old and one recent lancet on the south side, as well as a pillared piscina and remnants of mid-14th century wall paintings. The narrow chancel arch is round-headed and supported by abaci, with a squint on each side and fragments of wall painting above, including the central part of a Royal Coat of Arms.

Inside, the nave contains windows with fragments of wall paintings and three consecration crosses, with low walling that is boarded. At the west end, there are raised galleries featuring balusters and panelling, one of which is marked for the Earl of Portsmouth and the other for the Rector. The church also has a tub font and an 18th-century panelled pulpit. Externally, the walls are rendered with some brick strengthening and abutments, while the west wall is made of flint. The roof is tiled, and there is a boarded bell turret at the west end. The chancel features small Norman lights, while the nave has 19th-century windows with cusped lancets on the south side. The south porch is a gabled brick structure with a pointed arch, and two bricks are incised with "ROH" and the year 1694.
