Description

The Church of St Michael, built in 1775 and altered in 1894, features an aisleless nave with three windows on each side and a short chancel that has a segmental apse. It includes a 19th-century porch. The roof above the apse is flat, and the brick dentil eaves and curb to the apse parapet indicate later reconstruction. At the west end, there is a small timber bell turret with a tiled roof. The church is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with blue flush panels around the openings and two tall panels on the plain chancel walls, using header bricks at the apse end. The openings are adorned with red rubbed semi-circular arches, stepped stone keys, and stone impost blocks, along with a plinth. The later west wall features two buttresses. The windows have leaded lights with coloured side panes. The porch has a tiled roof and boarded walls above a brick base, with the doorway repositioned from its original location, now serving as a window. Inside, the nave ceiling, repaired in 1971, is segmental, while the chancel ceiling is semi-circular, both meeting the plain walls with a cavetto moulding. The chancel includes a panelled dado, with tall panels on each side of the altar enclosed by fluted pilasters and a cornice, and the floor is paved with coloured marble. The font, made of two parts, dates from the 18th century and is of Italian origin, featuring a white marble bowl with small cherub heads and a sandstone baluster with raised figures. The oak pulpit is also from the 18th century.
