Description

This coal tax post, dating from around 1861, is made of metal and stands approximately 4.5 feet high. It features a four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier and a moulded capital band above, topped with a pyramidal finial. The front displays the City of London Shield, along with lettering on the pier below that reads "24 & 25 VICT/CAP 42". This post served as a marker for the boundary where duty was payable on coal, a tax that has its origins in the 1660s.
