Description

The Bofors Tower is situated south of Burntwood Lane in a pasture field. It consists of two elevated reinforced concrete platforms that are positioned next to each other. One platform would have supported a Bofors anti-aircraft gun, while the other was intended for its range predictor, which calculated the speed and height of enemy aircraft to ensure the gun's accuracy. The purpose of placing Bofors guns and their equipment on towers was to elevate them above the landscape, allowing for a 360-degree field of fire against low-flying and fast-moving enemy aircraft.

The tower is constructed from reinforced concrete, featuring concrete piers and cross-braces that rise in three sections to the gun and predictor platforms. The piers are square in section, and the cross-braces are reinforced at the joints. Aerial photographs reveal that the platforms have a broadly rectangular shape, with a small projection at the north-west corner. Access to the platforms was originally provided by ladder stairs, which were removed shortly after the war. However, the projection on the eastern platform and another projecting piece of concrete on the west side at a high level indicate where part of the stairs once stood. It appears that the eastern platform served as the gun platform, as a central circular mark, likely the ghost of the gun holdfast, is visible in aerial photographs.
