Description
The Church of St John is a Grade II listed building, constructed in 1881 by W. Bassett Smith, with the north aisle and chapels designed by Sir T.G. Jackson. It is built of Bargate stone and features plain tiled roofs with ridgecresting. The church comprises a nave and aisles, a north porch, a three-stage tower at the west, and a chancel at the east. The tower has offset buttresses and a stair turret that rises through two stages at the northeast corner. The top stage of each face has doubled louvred openings beneath arched hood moulds, with angle gargoyles, a quatrefoil parapet, and corner crocketed finials. The east window showcases curvilinear stone tracery, while the other windows have standard decorated tracery. There are panelled doors on the north and west sides.
Inside, the church features large tiled floors and five-bay nave arcades supported by compound piers with four columns. The altar is floored with marble. Notable stained glass from 1893 by Heaton Butter and Bayne can be found in the north aisle. The fittings include a 13th-century font from the Church of St Laurence in Caterham, which is circular with a central stem and four attached shafts, a circular stone pulpit, and a stone mosaic reredos with a billeted top.
