Description
This is a milestone dating from around 1744, located on the east side of the A22, approximately 100 meters south of the footbridge at Tupwood Lane. It marks a distance of 18 miles from Westminster Bridge, London, along the former Eastbourne Road.
The milestone is made of stone and has a rectangular shape, standing about 1 meter tall and 0.25 meters wide. It is carved from a single piece of rough-hewn stone, featuring straight sides that end in a shallow, chamfered cap. Two faces of the milestone are inscribed, on the north and south sides, both stating: "XVIII MILES FROM WESTMINSTER BRIDGE LONDON."
