Description
This is a milestone from around 1840, located on the west side of the A22, approximately 100 meters south of the junction with Byers Lane. It marks a distance of 24 miles from London on the former Eastbourne Road.
The milestone is made of stone and has a rectangular shape, standing about 1 meter tall and measuring 0.25 meters in width and depth. It is roughly hewn from a single piece of stone, featuring straight sides and a shallow, chamfered top. The visible face is inscribed near the top with the words: 24 / MILES / FROM / CORNHILL. Additionally, the top of the rear face has an ordnance survey mark.
