Description
This milestone, dating from around 1840, marks a distance of 23 miles from London on the former Eastbourne Road. It is located on the west side of the A22, approximately 200 meters north of the junction with Water Lane. The rectangular milestone stands about 0.6 meters tall and measures 0.25 meters in width and depth. It is made from a single piece of rough-hewn stone, featuring straight sides and a flat top. The visible face is inscribed with the text: 23 / MILES / FROM / CORNHILL.
