Description
This is a milestone dating from around 1744, located on the south side of Eastbourne Road (B2236) near the junction with Church Lane in Godstone. It marks the distance of 20 to 21 miles from London along the former Eastbourne Road.
The milestone is made of stone and stands approximately 1 meter tall and 0.25 meters wide. It is carved from a single piece of stone with straight sides and features a shallow, chamfered cap at the top. Three faces of the milestone are inscribed; two sides read: "XXI MILES FROM THE STANDARD IN CORNHILL, LONDON - 1744," while the third side states "XX MILES FROM WESTMINSTER BRIDGE LONDON" and includes a carved benchmark.
