Description
The Old Packhouse is a house dating from the early 15th century, originally a hall house, with a wing added to the south in the late 16th century. It underwent restoration in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is timber framed, standing on a rubblestone plinth with whitewashed, rendered infill. It features plain tiled roofs that are half hipped with end gablets on the right-hand range. There is an end stack to the left, a ridge stack at the centre of the right-hand range, and a large, offset stack at the rear left. The layout is L-shaped with a wing at the rear right. The house has two storeys and was originally a four-bay hall house, with a two-bay gable front wing to the front left and a projecting wing to the right that has a first floor jettied on corner brackets. Extensive curved bracing is visible. The 19th-century windows are diamond-patterned leaded casements, and the first-floor window on the left side of the right-hand wing has diamond-shaped wooden mullions. A planked door is located at the right end of the recessed centre bays. There is also a pentice roof addition to the right, set back with a dormer above. Inside, extensive timber framing is visible, along with traces of former service door openings. The interior features a square crown post with an enlarged square base and a double collar roof.
