Description
The barn at Tile Barn Farm is a Grade II listed structure, likely built in the early to mid-18th century, possibly incorporating some earlier timbers. It features a timber frame with weatherboard and corrugated iron cladding, set on a deep brick plinth constructed in both English and Flemish bonds, with a low rubblestone plinth at the south-west end. The roof is made of corrugated iron.
The barn has central opposing cart entrances that have been lowered on the farmyard side, with corrugated iron doors on the opposite side. The south-west end is clad in corrugated iron and has a 20th-century range attached, which is not of special interest.
Inside, the sole plate is set on the plinth, with unjowelled wall posts that have long straight braces connecting to the wall plates and tie-beams. Some of the intermediate posts have been replaced or are missing. The roof structure includes queen strut trusses with clasped through-purlins, which have been partly renewed, and coupled rafters that bear carpenter's marks, although there is no ridge-piece.
Documentary evidence indicates that a barn was built on this site in 1680, but the framing of the current building is characteristic of the 18th century, except for the rafters, which are likely reused.
