Description
The Church of St John the Evangelist is a church built in 1842 by John Whichcord and Walker, with an apsidal chancel and south aisle added by G.M. Hills in 1886. It is constructed of galleted rubblestone with ashlar dressings and features a restored plain tiled roof with a cedar shingled broach spire at the west end. The layout includes a nave and aisles, a porch to the south, a chancel to the east, a vestry to the northeast, and a diagonally buttressed tower to the west. The windows exhibit Early English Revival tracery. There are planked doors located at the west, south, and north entrances, with the west door featuring moulded jamb shafts.
Inside, the church has a four-bay nave arcade supported by octagonal piers with stiff foliage capitals and double chamfered arches. The chancel arch is also double chamfered and includes a corbel band. The apsidal end of the chancel roof features a complicated semi-circular truss, while the nave has a crown post roof. Notable fittings include a stained glass window at the east end of the south aisle, dedicated to Ann Beaumont, created in the early 20th century by Morris & Sons. The window has an octagonal stone front with quatrefoil panels and an arcaded stem.
