Description
The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a church built in 1881 by E. Ingress-Bell. It is constructed of dressed stone with stone quoins and dressings, featuring a plain tiled roof and a wood shingled fleche over the crossing that supports a metal weathervane. The church has a cruciform plan with transepts, an apsidal chancel that includes chapels, a narthex at the west end, and a vestry addition to the northeast that connects back to the priest's houses, which are not included in the listing. The north aisle windows have plate tracery, while the south side features cusped head lancets. There are buttresses at the ends of the transepts, thick hood mouldings over the lancet windows in the transepts, and circular windows.
Inside, the church has three bay nave arcades supported by square stone piers with moulded angles. The south aisle is lower than the north aisle, and the west bay of the south arcade is blocked. The ceiling is wooden, with a wood quadripartite vault over the crossing and a wood panelled ceiling in the chapel. The chancel arch features three orders of jamb shafts and a hood moulding. There are 19th-century wall paintings depicting angels and foliage patterns on the chancel walls. The fittings date from the 19th and 20th centuries.
