Description
The Church of St John is a church built between 1842 and 1843, with the chancel and porch added in 1900. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings and features a stone slate roof with gable copings and a moulded eaves cornice. The church has a square three-tier west tower with a porch on the south side, diagonal buttresses on the lower tier, and a blind oculus on the second tier of the south side. The bell-chamber openings are three-light, square-headed, and louvred, with arched lights. The west window is a lancet style, and the plain parapet is topped with pointed octagonal pinnacles. The east window is a six-light transomed design with a blind lower tier and intersecting tracery above. There are five two-light nave windows featuring Y-tracery.
Inside, the church has a four-bay arcade on both the left and right sides, supported by octagonal piers with moulded capitals and similar responds. The organ is located to the left, and there is a moulded chancel arch leading to the choir in the chancel. A vestry is situated on the south side of the chancel. The nave roof is wooden and tunnel vaulted with stencilling, while the chancel roof features close, braced trusses. The galleries and box pews were removed in 1900.
