Description

The coal tax post, dating from around 1860, stands approximately 3½ feet high. It features a metal four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier above. The post has a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top, with the City of London Corporation shield cast on the front. The lettering on the pier reads "24 & 25 VICT/CAP 42". This post served as a Coal and Wine duty marker, indicating the boundary where tax was payable, with the coal tax origins tracing back to the 1660s.
