Description

The coal tax post outside No. 100 on Epsom Lane North dates from around 1860 and stands approximately 3½ feet high. It features a metal plinth with four legs and a chamfered pier above. The post has a moulded capital band topped with a pyramidal shape. On the front, there is a cast shield of the City of London Corporation, along with lettering on the pier that reads: "24 & 25/VICT CAP 42". This post served as a marker indicating the boundary where duty was payable on coal and wine, with the coal tax originating in the 1660s.
