Description

This is a First World War memorial, erected in 1920 and designed by L Stanley Crosbie. The memorial is constructed from Portland stone, with bronze plaques affixed to it. It takes the form of a cross set atop a fluted, tapering shaft. The shaft stands on a moulded pedestal and a stepped, octagonal base. The square pedestal has notched angles and features plaques on all four sides. The north face displays a plaque reading ‘TO THE GLORY / OF GOD / AND / IN MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF THIS / PARISH WHO GAVE / THEIR LIVES IN / THE WORLD WARS / OF / 1914-1918 / AND / 1939-1945 / R.I.P’. A second plaque, inscribed ‘MAJOR PAUL H G HARDING / THE RIFLES IRAQ JUNE 2007’ is located below, on a curved section of the pedestal. The other three sides of the pedestal feature plaques, two recording the names of those who died in the First World War, and one listing the names of those who died in the Second World War.
