Description

Walton Manor House is a medieval house, dating from the 14th century onwards, and significantly remodelled in the 17th and late 19th centuries, with considerable reduction in size. The older parts of the house incorporate greens and mixed flint alongside 19th-century brick, half-timbering, and tile hanging in the Norman Shaw style. It has a 19th-century plain tile roof with rubbed brick stacks. Embedded within the extensions are the remnants of the original manor house, consisting of a two-storey hall and a chapel projecting eastward. The only visible remains of this original structure are at the west end of the house. The fenestration is mixed; one early 17th-century mullion and transom window survives, with four lights and a drip, now partly concealed behind a porch. A 20th-century window is located above it, and an armorial plaster panel is set between them, dated 1626. A projecting two-bay wing to the right features 19th-century sash windows, restored buttresses, and a gable lit attic. A slight projecting portion to the left has one 16th-century ground-floor window set in a deep recess, and a large gable break dating from around 1880.

The interior includes fine Adam-style fireplaces in ground floor rooms on the southeast corner, and a large 18th and 19th-century panelled drawing room located to the southwest. Within the drawing room are the remains of the old manor’s west wall, a stone wall with a moulded doorway, and arched triangular windows on either side. This is the only remaining structure of its type in Surrey.
