Description
This coal tax post, dating from around 1864, is located on the north side of Well Farm Road in Caterham and Warlingham. It stands approximately 4.5 feet high and features a four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier, a moulded capital band, and a pyramidal top. The front displays a cast City of London shield along with lettering on the pier that reads "ACT/24 & 25 VICT/CAP 42". This post served as a marker for the boundary where duty was payable on coal and wine, with the coal tax originating in the 1660s.
