Description

The Coal Tax Post, located at NGR TQ 23155456, dates from around 1860 and stands approximately 3.5 feet high. It features a metal four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier above. The post has a moulded capital band topped with a pyramidal shape. On the front, there is a cast shield of the City of London Corporation, along with lettering on the pier that reads "24 & 25/VICT CAP 422." This post served as a marker indicating the boundary where duty was payable on coal and wine, with the coal tax dating back to the 1660s.
