Description
The Coal Tax Post, located at NGR TQ 26205733, is a historical structure dating from around 1861, designed by Henry Grissell. This metal post stands approximately 5 feet high and features a four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier above. It has a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top. The front of the post displays the City of London shield, while the pier is inscribed with the lettering "24 & 25 VICT/CAP 42." The maker's name is found on the back of the post. This Coal and Wine tax post marks the boundary where duty was payable, with the coal tax origins tracing back to the 1660s.
