Description
This coal and wine tax post, dating from around 1861, was made by Henry Grissell. It is approximately 4 feet high and features a four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier that has a moulded central band and a pyramidal top. The front displays the City of London shield, while the lettering on the pier reads "24 & 25 VICT/CAP 42". The maker's name is located on the rear. This post marks the boundary where duty was payable on coal and wine, with the coal tax originating in the 1660s.
