Description
This coal and wine tax post, dating from around 1861, was made by Henry Grissell. It stands approximately 4 feet high and features a four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier above. The post has a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top. On the front, there is a cast City of London shield, and the lettering on the pier reads "ACT/24 & 25 VICT/CAP 42" on a correcting plate. This post marks the boundary where duty was payable on coal, a practice that dates back to the 1660s.
