Description
The Coal Tax Post opposite Yew Tree Close is a historical marker dating from around 1861, made by Henry Grissell. It is approximately 4 feet high and constructed of metal. The post features a chamfered pier set on a four-legged plinth, with a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top. The front displays a cast City of London shield, and the lettering on the pier reads "24 & 25 VICT/CAP 42". The maker's name is inscribed on both the back and front of the post. This coal and wine tax post indicates the boundary where duty was payable, with coal taxation practices dating back to the 1660s.
