Description
This is a coal and wine tax post located at the junction with Hollymead Road, dating from around 1861 and made by Henry Grissell. The post stands approximately 4 feet high and features a four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier above. It has a moulded capital and a pyramidal top. The front displays the City of London shield, and the pier is inscribed with the lettering "24 VICT". The maker's name is found on both the front and back of the post. This structure indicates the boundary where duty was payable on coal, a tax that dates back to the 1660s.
