Description

The Coal Tax Post beside Starbridge, located at TQ 28915683, is a Grade II listed structure dating from around 1861. It was made by Henry Grissell and stands approximately 3 feet high. The post features a metal, four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier above, adorned with a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top. A City of London shield is displayed on the front, along with lettering on a correction plate attached to the front rods that reads "ACT/24 and 25 VICT/CAP 42". This coal and wine tax post marks the boundary where duty was payable, with the tax on coal originating from the 1660s.
