Description

The Coal Tax Post, located on the north side at the east end of The Causeway in Egham, dates from around 1861 and was made by Henry Grissell. This metal post stands approximately 4 feet high and features a four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier above it. It has a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top. The front displays the City of London shield, while the pier is inscribed with the lettering '25 & 25 VICT/CAP 42', and the maker's name is found on the rear. This coal and wine tax post marks the boundary where duty was payable, with the tax on coal originating as far back as the 1660s.
