Description
The Coal Tax Post at the west end of The Hythe on a traffic island dates from around 1861 and was made by Henry Grissell. It is approximately 4 feet high and features a four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier above. The post has a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top. On the front, there is a shield of the City of London, and the lettering on the pier reads "24 & 25 VICT/CAP42." The maker's name is located on the rear. This coal and wine tax post marks the boundary where duty was payable, with the tax on coal dating back to the 1660s.
