Description

This is a group of houses, dating to the 17th century, which have been altered in the 19th century and are now occupied as shops. The building is a mix of timber framing, brick, and whitewashed roughcast cladding, topped by plain tiled roofs. It consists of a two-storey, double-gabled range on the left side. There are truncated offset stacks to the right of centre and at the front of the building. Each gable has a blind panel, with a mullioned and transomed cross window positioned below each one, featuring a label moulding above. The ground floor has fixed glazing-bar shop windows, with pilaster strips at the ends. A pair of glazed doors, topped by transom lights, are located centrally. A single 3-light casement window sits on the first floor to the right, with a fixed shop window below. An angled porch provides access to a glazed door at the right-hand end. The houses are situated on the former site of the castle ditch, which was filled in during the 16th century.
