Description
Nos 53 and 53A on Quarry Street is a house dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with 19th-century extensions on the left. It features a timber frame built over chalk block cellars, with a brick underbuild and whitewashed rendered cladding above, topped by plain tiled roofs. The building has an L-shaped plan with a gabled cross wing on the right, standing two storeys tall with attics. There is a 19th-century ridge stack on the left of the wing, along with additional stacks at the rear and right. The first floor has three 19th-century windows on the left, with a blocked window on the ground floor below. To the left is a camber-headed door. The jettied gable end on the right has a three-light window on the first floor and a single-light window to the left, with a round-arched attic window above. The ground floor features a plate glass shop front on tiled risers, with a door set in a recess at the center. Inside, there is a truncated dragon beam on the ground floor to the left, and a deep stone and brick fireplace with herringbone brick in the rear wall of the hearth, adorned with guilloche painting on the lintel above. Additional clover leaf and floral paintings can be seen on the ceiling joists. The building was undergoing restoration at the time of the resurvey.
