Description

Nos. 13 and 13A on Buttgarden Street is a house, now divided into two residences. It likely dates from the early 18th century and was remodeled in the early or mid-19th century. The front is solidly rendered and features a slate roof that continues from Nos. 11-12. There is an old red-brick chimney on the left side wall with three tall, tapered round pots. The building has two storeys with a garret and a three-window range, with a doorway located in the middle bay of the ground storey. The front is slightly asymmetrical, as the doorway is not directly below the middle window above.

The entrance features a six-panelled door, where the two lowest panels are flush and the top two are now glazed, along with an old knocker. Above the door is a fanlight with radial bars, which has been painted over, and an open triangular pediment supported by shaped consoles. The windows consist of two lights with raised surrounds, where the side-pieces project slightly above the lintels, which in turn extend beyond the side-pieces. The sashes are six-paned and set in slightly recessed box-frames, except for the middle second-storey window, which has four-paned sashes. All but the left-hand window's sashes on each storey have horns. The building features raised quoins on both storeys, although the quoins at the right-hand end of the ground storey have been reduced to a single vertical strip. There are two hipped dormers, one at each end, each with two-paned sashes that also have horns.

The interior description from 1976 mentions 'stud and panel partitions on ground and upper floors, apparently in deal not oak with deep moulded edges.' Buttgarden Street is believed to have been laid out around 1700.
