Description

This is a two-storey house, likely built in the early 18th century and remodelled in the early or mid-19th century. It is now sub-divided. The front is solid and rendered, with a slate roof which extends across to the adjacent property at No. 13. There are two brick chimneys, one on the left side-wall and another on the right, with the top of the latter rebuilt. The house has a three-window front, with a doorway in the centre of the ground floor. Above the door is a flat hood supported by consoles, and flanking pilasters with rectangular incised decoration. The doorway has a six-panelled door. The windows are mostly 12-paned sashes, except for the smaller window in the centre of the second floor, which has 8 panes. Two dormer windows, each with two lights and pent-roofs, were probably added later. A 1976 report on Nos. 12 and 13A mentioned stud and panel partitions on the ground and upper floors, made of deal wood rather than oak, with deep moulded edges. Buttgarden Street is believed to have been laid out around 1700.
