Description

The Britannic Assurance building, originally a house and now an office, features a late 17th century to early 18th century front with a core dating back to the 16th century or early 17th century. The front is clad in colourwashed brick, while the right-hand return front has tile hanging, and the rear extension is finished in cement render. The building has a plain tiled roof that is half-hipped at the front and includes a gabled wing at the rear. It stands two storeys tall with attics at the front, and the ground drops steeply away to the rear. There are stacks located at the rear. The front has two hipped roof casement dormers situated above a bold modillioned eaves cornice. The first floor features two 16-pane glazing-bar sash windows in open sash boxes, with a blocked window in the centre. The ground floor has two plate glass windows and a central half-glazed door that is sheltered by a flat hood supported by bold volute scroll brackets, which are carved at the ends. At the rear, there is a small attic window in the rear wing, along with a lower 19th-century wing that has a first-floor sash window and casement doors leading to the ground floor. Inside, some ceiling framing is exposed, and remnants of partition framing can still be seen. Photographs of the building are held in the National Monuments Record.
