Description

No. 51 Quarry Street is a town house that has been converted into a shop and offices. It dates from the early 17th century, with an 18th-century front and alterations made in the 20th century. The building features a timber frame that is exposed on the rear gable, with brick infilling, and has red/brown brick cladding on the front, which is painted on the ground floor. The roofs are parallel-range and covered with plain tiles, with a boarded gable end on the left side.

The structure has three storeys, with plat bands over the ground and first floors and diagonal brick dentils at the eaves. There is a stack at the rear. On the second floor, there is one sash window surrounded by an architrave, and below it on the first floor, there is a cambered-head casement window. The ground floor features a plate glass shop front with a glazed door to the right, which is sheltered by a flat hood.

Inside, the wall frames are visible, and there is a stop-chamfered spine beam in the ceiling of the front room on the ground floor. A small late 18th-century or 19th-century turned baluster staircase is present, along with remnants of an old Queen-strut clasped-purlin roof over the lower rear range. The building was undergoing restoration at the time of the re-survey.
