Description

Castle House is a mid-18th century house, later altered in the 19th century, and with 19th century extensions to the rear. It is located on Quarry Street, Guildford. The house is constructed of red/brown brick with a plain tiled roof largely hidden by later stone-coped parapets. A rendered extension to the rear has a hipped slate roof.

The front facade is two storeys and attics over a basement, with single-storey extensions to the rear. A basement plinth is visible, with plat bands above the ground and first floors. A modillioned eaves cornice and angle quoining are also present. Ridge stacks are located at the ends of the building. The front has five bays, with six-pane attic sashes in gauged-brick heads, 12-pane glazing-bar sash windows on the first floor – some retaining old glass – and four 12-pane windows on the ground floor. A central door, consisting of four fielded panels and two flush panels, is approached by two steps within a deep panelled reveal, and has a fanlight above and impost mouldings to the lintel. The door surround is Roman Doric with two columns, an open modillioned pediment, and wave decoration on the column pedestals. A single-storey rear extension is of square plan and features a large Tudor-Gothic window of four lights, under a label moulding, each light with a four-centre arch and mullions composed of three thin shafts. Double casement doors sit at the centre. Internally, some architrave mouldings are visible to the doorcases.
