Description
No. 5 Ely Street is a town house that has been converted into a shop and dwelling. It was built in 1780, with a possible earlier rear wing from the 17th century. The building is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and features some internal timber-framing. It has a renewed tiled roof with brick end stacks, one of which is axial to the left. The design follows the Georgian style and consists of two storeys with an attic and a two-window range. There is a top ashlar cornice, and the late 20th-century shop front includes two recessed entrances.
On the first floor, the windows have moulded sills and rusticated flat arches with keys above tripartite sashes. The left side features 4-pane horned sashes, while the right side has 4:12:4-pane sashes. There are also two hipped dormers with 2-light casements. The gable to the right is brick-coped, and there is a two-storey gabled wing at the rear. Inside, the ground floor has chamfered beams.
