Description

No. 10 Ely Street is a town house that has been converted into a shop and dwelling. It dates from the early 17th century and features a refronting and additions from around 1800. The building has a timber frame set on a stone plinth, which has been refaced with painted brick. The roof is newly tiled, with slate on the rear and a brick stack at the front ridge. It is a single unit with an outshut and has two storeys with a two-window range. The building is adorned with modillioned brick cornices.

The entrance, located at the left end, has a segmental head and features a plank door. There is a canted bay window with a frieze and cornice, which contains fixed glazing arranged in a 4:16:4 pattern. On the first floor, there are 3- and 2-light casements with iron opening lights. The right side of the building reveals exposed square framing on a coursed rubble plinth, with painted brick on the catslide rear outshut. A cast-iron sign plate refers to a 19th-century tenement that once stood at the rear but has since been demolished. The rear of the building includes a 20th-century door and ground-floor window, along with a 3-light casement on the first floor. Inside, there are chamfered beams, and the timber-framed gable is exposed on the first floor of the adjacent No. 9.
