14, Ely Street

No. 14 Ely Street is a town house dating from the early 17th century, which was refronted in the mid 18th century. The front is made of painted brick, concealing an earlier timber frame, and it has a tile roof with a brick stack at the rear. The building has two storeys and features a symmetrical three-window range. The entrance includes a plank door, with a similar entrance at the left end. A hipped slate pentice extends over the canted bay windows on either side of the central entrance; the right bay has 1:3:1-light glazing, while the left bay has glazing from the 20th century. The first floor has segmental-headed windows with three-light casements, and there is a boarded gabled dormer that is said to have a leaded window. The right gable end reveals part of the original timber frame, and there is a rear wing.
