Description
59 and 60 Ely Street is an outbuilding that has been converted into shops. It likely dates from the late 16th century or 17th century, with some later alterations. The structure is timber-framed and features a half-hipped tile roof with a brick stack located at the rear of the ridge. It has a two-unit plan and is a single storey with an attic. To the right, there is a carriage entrance next to an early 20th-century shop front, while the left end has a gabled dormer with a three-light small-paned casement window that includes an iron opening casement. The right side of the building reveals exposed timber-framing. At the rear, there is an attached 19th-century range, which is not included in this listing. Inside, the building has chamfered beams, and the windows face the carriageway, with a pitching hole located above. Part of the roof is exposed. This building is part of the L-plan yard behind Nos 26-28 High Street, which was originally owned by John Rogers and likely included a malthouse in its history.
